Course Description

The SAT Essay Preparation Course is an 8-week program designed to provide students with the necessary skills to formulate coherent theses and articulate and support ideas logically and clearly. As the SAT allows only 25 minutes to complete the essay portion of the test, it is imperative that students be able to employ the conventions of written English and produce grammatically clean sentences under the pressure of the time clock.

Given the intended purpose of the course, the focus is largely on the initial phases of the writing process, although students will be expected to develop one of their essays through to a final draft.

We will begin our course practicing effective writing, from well constructed sentences to clear and concise paragraphs, with the objective of articulating compelling and engaging arguments. The course will be divided into 4 two-week segments. For each of the first 3 segments the students will be refining their skills on one specific form of essay: the narrative, the expository, and the persuasive. For the final block of two weeks, the students will select one of the three essays they have been developing; they will then edit and revise it to the "good copy" stage.
